If an employee doesn't have a social security number:
They will not be eligible for coverage. Insurance companies require a social security number on employee applications.
If a dependent doesn't have a social security number:
You can still add them to the insurance policy. When you reach the step of the application that requires you to enter a social security number, you can input "123451234" and then you'll be able to move to the next step.
Some instances where a dependent might not have an social security number include:
- Adding a newborn dependent that hasn't been issued a social security number yet
- Adding spouses and/or children of employees who are in the United States on work visas
Note: Despite not needing a social security number for dependents to enroll initially, your insurance company may send a request for a social security number during renewal. It's best to send us social security numbers when they become available and we'll update your insurance carriers.
