Open Enrollment is the yearly period when employees can enroll in a health insurance plan or make changes to their plan.
During this period, the following changes can take place:
- employees who previously declined medical, dental, or vision coverage can enroll in health insurance
- employees with dependents who previously declined coverage can enroll a spouse or child in coverage
- if a company offers multiple plans, employees can change plans (for example from Bronze to a Gold plan)
Outside the Open Enrollment Period, employees generally can enroll in a health insurance plan only if they have a qualifying event, like getting married, having a baby, or losing other health coverage.
